Gugelhupf (One Large Cake)

cup warm water

packages or cake yeast, active dry or compressed

cups unsifted flour

cup milk

cup sugar

cup margarine

cup chopped almonds
1/3
cup seedless raisins
1/3
cup golden seedless raisins
1/4
cup candied orange peel
1/4
cup chopped candied lemon peel
Directions

Measure warm water into large mixing bowl. Sprinkle or crumble in yeast. Stir until dissolved. Add 1/2 cup flour; blend. Cover, let rise in warm place, free from drafts, until light and bubbly, about 1/2 hour. Scald milk; stir in sugar, salt, and margarine; cool to lukewarm. Stir lukewarm milk mixture, egg yolks, and egg into sponge mixture. Add remaining flour; mix well. Stir in nuts and fruits.

Turn into greased 9-inch Turk's-head mold (a fluted tube cake pan with 3-quart capacity) or a 9-inch tube cake pan. Let rise in warm place, free from drafts, until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Bake at 375 degrees for about 30 minutes. Unmold while cake is warm and sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
