Foolproof Vanilla Taffy

Does anyone make homemade taffy anymore? My Grandmother did. This was her recipe and I just had to share it. Makes for a great gifting treat.

Prep
Cook
Serves 0person
Ingredients
3
cups sugar
2
tbsp butter
2
cup less 2 tbsp light corn syrup
1
tsp vanilla
1
cup water
Directions
1.
Butter sides of 3 quart saucepan.
2.
Add sugar, corn syrup and water then stir with wooden spoon until sugar dissolves.
3.
Bring to boil quickly over medium-high heat.
4.
Stir as little as possible and do not scrape sides of pan above cooking mixture (to prevent sugar crystals forming),
5.
If sugar crystals form on sides of pan, wipe them off.
6.
Cook to the hard ball stage (256°).
7.
Add butter and continue cooking to 262°.
8.
Remove from heat.
9.
Pour into buttered and chilled shallow pan or platter about 13x9".
10.
Turn edges to center with a heavy spatula.
11.
While candy cools, make several gashes on surface; add vanilla to be worked in during pulling.
12.
When cool enough to be handled, pull till taffy changes to a shiny, platinum ribbon.
13.
Cut into bite-size pieces with buttered scissors.
14.
Cool, then wrap.
