Southern Buttermilk Yeast Biscuits

This is a holiday biscuit. One would also make this for very special occasions or celebrations. It's the best southern style biscuit around.

Ingredients
5
cups self-rising flour, sifted
1
cup shortening, scant
1
package yeast
1/2
cup lukewarm water
2
tsp sugar
2
cups buttermilk
1/2
tsp baking soda
Directions
1.
In a large bowl, add flour then cut in shortening.
2.
In a second bowl, mix yeast and water until dissolved, then add sugar.
3.
In a third bowl, mix baking soda and buttermilk.
4.
Combine all three bowls together.
5.
Knead combined mixture on a floured board.
6.
Roll dough into 1/2 inch thickness.
7.
Cut the biscuits, place close together on a lightly greased pan.
8.
Bake at 450° until golden brown.
