Sugar Cookies

My mother's and my daughter's favorite cookies, but apparently it skipped a generation! We've decorated them in the past but have discovered that we all prefer them on the plain side- just a touch of festive colored sugar. Our favorite cookie cutters to use with this dough are our woodland critters. At the end of making them when we have a little dough left we form it into a cookie with our hands and let the dog eat that one as a holiday treat since these are chocolate free, and we don't want to leave our beloved pets out!

Prep
Cook
Serves 60people
Ingredients
3 1/4
cup flour
2 1/2
tsp baking powder
1 1/2
stick butter
1 1/2
tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2
cup sugar
2
eggs
1
tbs milk
sugar for topping if desired
Directions
1.
Sift together dry ingredients and set aside.
2.
With a mixer, cream butter. Add vanilla and sugar, and beat well. Beat in the eggs one at a time and then add milk. While on low, gradually add in the dry ingredients, scraping the bowl as you go. Cover and refrigerate the dough for an hour at minimum.
3.
Preheat oven to 400. Prepare cutting surface by flouring. Roll out dough to about 1/4" thickness and cut into shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheet 2" apart and sprinkle with colored sugar if desired. Bake until lightly browned, about 8 minutes. Cool on sheet for a minute before removing to cool on rack.
