Kourambiethes Greek Cookies

This is Grandpa Jim's favorite treat. Grandma E. makes them for him for Christmas.

Ingredients
1
pound unsalted butter, softened
1/2
cup sifted powdered sugar
1
egg yolk
4 1/2
cups sifted flour
1/2
teaspoon baking powder
1/4
teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2
teaspoons vanilla extract
1-2
tablespoons ouzo (can substitute cognac or bourbon)
1
pound powdered sugar for topping cookies
small cupcake papers
Directions
1.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees

In a large bowl beat softened butter 3-5 minutes , add 1/2 cup of powdered sugar and egg yolk. Beat well.

In second bowl, sift 1 cup flour with baking powder and ground cloves.

Stir the mixture into the egg and the butter.
5.
Add the vanilla and the ouzo. Mix in 2 cusps of flour beating continuously.
6.
Add chopped almonds.
7.
Next add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time or until dough is no longer sticky. The dough should be light and airy.
8.
Shape into 1 inch balls using thumb or small spoon to slightly indent center. Use ungreased cookie sheet to bake approx. 20 minutes or until edges are light brown.
9.
Cookies are very hot and fragile, let cool 8-10 minutes before sifting on powdered sugar. Place cookies into paper cups.
10.
Store in cover container in a cool place or refrigerator.
