Natalie Zahn's German Holiday Drink “Gluhwein”

I married into a lot of German recipes, even my last name means ‘tooth’ in German. This came from my mother-in-law, passed down now 4 generations.

Prep
Cook
Serves 3people
Ingredients
1 1/2
Bottles of red wine (I use Merlot)
4-5
Cinnamon Sticks
10
whole cloves
1
tangerine or mandarin orange (zest or juice)
1
lemon (zest)
1
cup sugar
Directions
1.
Combine all of the ingredients in a large pot and heat slowly over low until steaming hot. *But don’t let it come to a boil, or the alcohol will cook out and that’s not fun!
2.
Continue to heat slowly so the flavors can mingle and infuse the wine
3.
When ready to drink, strain the heated wine into a large pitcher, pour into coffee mugs
4.
If you don’t have a zester, you can put slices of the lemon and orange in the mix instead
5.
NOTE: This is very nice to sip on a cold evening…this will warm you right up. Pronounced “gloo-vine”
