Despite its strange appearance, I would like to assure everyone that it is not fruitcake. It is essentially a sweet bread with candied fruit and icing. It has been enjoyed by my family for many years and is a recipe passed down from my grandmother.

Ingredients

cup milk

cup sugar
1 1/2
tsp salt

cup butter

oz) pkg dry yeast

cup water
1/2
tsp sugar

egg yolks

cups all-purpose flour

tsp ground cardamom seed
1/2
cup raisins
1/2
cup finely cut candied citron
1/2
cup sliced candied cherries
2 2/3
cups all-purpose flour
blanched sliced almonds to decorate tops after frosted
some melted butter -- see below
Directions
1.
Scald 1 cup milk
2.
Add 1/2 cup sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 3/4 cup butter
3.
Cool to lookwarm
4.
Heat 1/2 cup water to 110-115 (use thermometer)
5.
Add 2 packets of dry yeast and 1/2 teaspoon sugar

When yeast is dissolved, add to lukewarm milk
7.
Add whole eggs and egg yolks
8.
Add 3 cups flour and beat well
9.
Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours

Add cardamom seed - 1/2 teasppon, 1/2 cup raisins, 1/2 cup finely cut citron, 1/2 cup sliced candied cherries, and enough flour until dough pulls from side of bowl and is no longer sticky

Knead on lightly floured surface

Place in slightly greased bowl

Cover and let rise until doubled in bulk

Divide dough into thirds
15.
Roll each piece on floured board into oval shape
16.
Spread with melted butter
17.
Press down center, fold over lengthwide
18.
Place on cookie sheet that is greased
19.
Brush top with melted butter
20.
Let rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes
21.
Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes [top should be golden brown and look done, but not overly done because then it will be dry]
22.
Check after 20 minutes as some ovens are hotter than others
23.
While warm, frost with powdered sugar icing [use powdered sugar and some milk until it is spreadable]
24.
Decorate with cherries, citron and blanched almonds
